Jason - this is a GREAT point!! I think there are several "right" ways to look at keyword optimization - and all center around being aware of the keyword and writing good quality content!

I agree 1000% percent that you need to include synonyms and relevant text. I've often found that by writing good quality content, these things naturally unfold without having to spend lots of time researching and measuring variations.

I should also point out that the higher density is when measuring in Live-Keyword-Analysis. This only measures the text of the body content. However, the density of that body content is diluted once you put it on the page with sidebars, footers, etc.

I've had some people swear that what matters isn't density at all but that you have the exact keyword phrase on the page MORE times than the others ranking on page one. I've done research on that and found it to be inconsistent. I can only speak from what works for me :D With very unusual or awkward keywords, I've had the density in the 1.something percents and it has been effective.

I think the #1 think to remember though is that onsite optimization is just a PART of the SEO puzzle. What also matters is the number of backlinks and general buzz about the page.

Thanks for sharing Jason!!

John... you have officially just made my day! You are exactly the type of person that I wanted to reach with this challenge. If you've got more time than funds, that does NOT mean that you have to retreat and let the big dogs take the lead. With some knowledge, some confidence, and a lot of creativity and determination, you can hold your place among them or even above them!

Thanks Megan! I want to shout "Hallelujah!" after reading your comment. Keyword research is so, so, so critical in the beginning stages and yet it is oftentimes and afterthought. I know the process of keyword research can be confusing and frustrating. And being a human being, I know how we tend to conveniently avoid that which is confusing and frustrating.

But once you through the process and come out the other end, it is well worth the journey. There's just no point in starting an SEO campaign without good solid keyword research!

Thanks Tara! Onsite content optimization can be quite a tricky thing for people who have other things to do aside from studying and testing search engine rankings... you know, important things like running their businesses! I do hope that these steps make it simple to digest and implement.

Awesome resource Christine. Over delivered and contains a lot of valuable information. Hmm, though I may have to disagree with one point you've mentioned here, particularly with keyword density. I think it's best to keep it at least to 1 - 2%, and then concentrate with synonyms and keyword definitions to highlight relevancy. That's just my opinion about densities.

Great job here by the way. I may have to mention this on one of my next posts (on my personal blog).

Regards,
Jason
